Kungsleden: The King's Trail in Lapland

20 days440 kmModérée

The Kungsleden, or "King's Trail," is an immersion in a nature that seems never to have been touched by humans. Here, in Swedish Lapland, time is not measured in kilometres, but in contrasts: the infinite light of Arctic summer days, the purple hue of peat bogs in autumn, and the silence—a silence so deep it becomes almost palpable.

You walk on wooden boardwalks over marshy areas, cross icy rivers, and watch reindeer grazing peacefully a few metres away. Unlike the Alps, here the relief is softer, more spread out, but the wild aspect is amplified by the absence of trees on the high plateaus. It is a trek of immensity.

"The Kungsleden is not a destination. It is an encounter with Arctic immensity."

The Swedish mountain huts (STF) are havens of warmth after a day in the northern wind. There, you learn the art of the sauna in the middle of nowhere, the sharing of a hot meal while the outside temperature drops rapidly. Whether you choose the northern section toward Abisko or the south, every step on this trail reminds you that you are a guest in the kingdom of the tundra.
